The network's Premier Fresh Series of This Year Secures a Significant Extension for Seasons 2 and 3.

During the fall season, the late-night programming block debuted a new season of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, not long after, the channel introduced a fresh animated series with a distinctly unique feel. Haha, You Clowns emerged as sweet and soothing, evoking a animated take of a serene talk show. During a period often defined by bleakness, this show's wholesomeness found an audience and helped it become a surprise hit.

A Two-Season Greenlight

On December 18th, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two more seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to expand upon the world of the Campbell family. The show centers on three polite teenage brothers whose defining trait is their profound affection for their single father, with Cappa voicing for all four key characters.

"I’m so grateful to the fans of the show who took a chance on the show and shared it with others," said Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for a little longer."

A President's Endorsement

Accompanying the news laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He thanked the fans who discovered the show and advocated for its distinctly quirky sensibility.

"All of you showed up for this new show, championed for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Comforting Counterpoint

Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a gentle counterpart" to more cynical adult animated fare. Viewers found something unexpectedly cozy about watching this charming family go about their everyday routines.

Previously, creator Joe Cappa expressed his desire to move the comedy genre beyond its prevailing sarcastic tone. He linked this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.

“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” said Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we must laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”

What Comes Next

Now, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa may well be part of that comedic shift. At a minimum, the renewal promises audiences more opportunities to enjoy the heartfelt moments of the unique Campbell clan.

The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The entire series is available for streaming on HBO Max.
