The Former French President Preparing to Release Prison Memoir Chronicling His 20 Days Incarcerated

Nicolas Sarkozy is preparing a memoir in the coming weeks called Diary of a Prisoner, detailing his experience served behind bars.

The revelation emerged less than two weeks after the former president was released as he appeals his conviction related to illegal collaboration connected to efforts to secure political financing from the regime of former Libyan leader.

Prison Experience: Solitary Musings

“Inside jail one sees little, and activities are scarce,” he notes in one passage, suggesting the book centers around his thoughts from seclusion as opposed to extensive analysis on the packed and troubled French prison system.

“Silence escapes me, which doesn’t exist in La Santé, where noise is endless commotion,” he states. “The racket unfortunately never stops. Yet, similar to barren lands, personal reflection is fortified while incarcerated.”

Court Appearance: Recounting the Hardship

At his release request hearing, he participated by video link from inside the facility, describing his time inside as gruelling. He expressed in court: “I wish to commend to all the prison staff, showing great humanity, easing this difficult experience manageable – since it’s deeply troubling.”

“It never crossed my mind at this stage of life, I would end up incarcerated. It’s a trial I must endure. I admit it’s difficult, extremely tough. It leaves a mark all who experience it as it’s exhausting.”

Historical Context

The former president, the ex-head of state from 2007 to 2012, set a precedent as past president in the European Union and the first leader since WWII of France to be incarcerated.

Prior to imprisonment he mentioned he would use his time to write a book.

Reading Material

Unconfirmed is if he found the opportunity to go through the volumes he had in his cell: a biography of Jesus in two parts together with Dumas’s work the classic tale, in which a blameless person is imprisoned then breaks out to seek vengeance.

Daily Reality

The former leader was held secluded for his own security in a room roughly 100 square feet including private facilities at the correctional facility located in the capital. Security personnel stayed in an adjacent room.

Sources mentioned that he had eaten only yoghurts during his stay because he feared meals provided may have been contaminated. He had facilities to prepare his own meals but refused this, based on unnamed sources. Unclear remains if the memoir includes his dietary choices.

Lawyer’s Statements

His attorney, who visited his client each day while he was in prison, informed the court his safety would improve out of prison compared to inside. “He received death threats, heard shouts after dark and emergency responses next door during an inmate’s self-injury.”

Charges and Sentence

His incarceration began in late October when the judiciary gave him a five-year sentence on conspiracy charges in connection with efforts to obtain political donations during his election campaign.

He maintains his innocence and is contesting the ruling, and another court case is scheduled for the coming spring.
