The fast bowler Set to Play a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry

Pat Cummins bowling

The pace bowler has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.

The Australian chair of selectors the selector has declared that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming historic rivalry.

Rumors had circulated that Cummins might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Initial reports from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in Perth.

He revealed that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about the prospects of participating.

"We know that the window is narrowing and various factors at play, not just his injury, but additional elements," the selector added.

"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he will feature a key capacity. Hopefully it's the first Test. If not, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after scans revealed a lower back issue.

He has a history of spinal problems, with recurrences in multiple past seasons forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.

The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the series.

He mentioned that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but admitted it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the opener.

Contingency Plans

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.

The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from the national team for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the initial game as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.

"His involvement was limited to the starting games anyway. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for another day, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
