The Eurovision Song Contest Was Traditionally a Campy Joy – But It Has Evolved Into a Cynical Way to Whitewash War.
An freshly coined initialism surfaced several months following the onset of the military campaign against Gaza. Referred to as WCNSF, it stands for “Wounded child, no surviving family”. This designation is found only in Gaza, as stated by doctors such as paediatricians. Ordinarily, it is unusual for physicians to attend to a minor who has seen the death of their whole family. But, there has been absolutely nothing ordinary regarding the devastating conflict in Gaza, where whole bloodlines have been wiped out and the number of young amputees surpasses that of anywhere else in the world. Nothing ordinary about many doctors coming back from a devastated terrain with reports of children being systematically aimed at.
A Hell on Earth Despite a Reported Truce
Conditions in Gaza persist as a profound humanitarian disaster. Essential medical supplies are failing to reach those in need, and groups like Amnesty International have stated that atrocities are ongoing. Officials rejects these allegations, consistent with how it denies each claim it is charged with. But while young survivors are now enduring frigid conditions in improvised encampments, there is some ostensibly positive news: nothing is going to stop the Eurovision song contest from continuing with its stated mission of “togetherness and artistic sharing.” Organizers will continue to roll out a prestigious stage for Israel, despite the fact that a number of European countries have now pulled out in protest. And this, it seems, is what global togetherness looks like.
Eurovision, of course prohibited Russia from taking part in 2022 due to the “grave situation in Ukraine”. Yet the conflict in Gaza seems entirely distinct.
Contradictory Principles
Overlook the circumstance that Israel was criticized for questionable voting tactics last year in what seems to have been an attempt to politicise Eurovision. Set aside the news that a young child was reportedly killed in Gaza just days ago. Neglect the data that aggression from Israeli settlers and systematic expulsions in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Disregard the condition that foreign reporters are still prevented from unfettered access in Gaza. All of this, it would seem, should be seen as a barrier of Eurovision’s cherished spirit of unity.
The Pageant Proceeds Amidst Unimaginable Suffering
The contest marks seven decades next year – almost double the projected longevity of a person in Gaza at present. The show may go on, but it will never be able to restore the camp joy it once represented. An institution that initially championed harmony has devolved into a transparent instrument to whitewash war.
