The Details Known About the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Shooting

A minimum of 16 individuals were killed and over 40 were hurt when attackers shot at a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, a tragedy Australian authorities have labeled a act of terrorism.

As of the newest reports, officials have confirmed the number of fatalities stands at 16, encompassing one of the alleged attackers. Furthermore, 42 injured people were transported to medical facilities.

The victims have not yet been publicly named, but investigators think their ages are between 10 and 87 years of age.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Known as a father of five children, he worked as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and friends spoke of him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative asked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, as stated by his wife.

She described the events before the shooting, saying they were standing when the shooting erupted. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.

The husband and wife were both survivors of the Holocaust, having faced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had later moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

In a statement, the Foreign Minister expressed that France shared the grief of his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the message continued.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was also killed in the incident, as per reports referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospital, a significant number are still under care, with a number in serious condition. The injured comprise two police officers who attended the scene.

One of the injured is a bystander who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the gunmen. Described as a hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. It has been reported he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he described the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the actions of those who came to assist. He stated he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the shooting. He said he heard “a large number” of gunshots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
