That Grisly Cartoon Film Conclusion That Haunts Fans
Out of all the mature animated films I’ve ever viewed, no other has remained with me as much as the fear-filled ending of the explicitly bloody as well as overwhelingly transgressive 2022 movie The Unicorn Wars.
In the year 2015, the Spain-based writer-director developed a grim, bleak , often savage universe with some tiny , forlorn glimmers of hope.
While The Unicorn Wars feels like it stemmed from a desire to push the medium further, the director clarified that it was actually a try to communicate a universal, cross-cultural theme regarding “the shared root of all wars.”
This theme is communicated by means of a group of brightly hued teddy bears , openly inspired by a famous line of cuddly figures.
Being raised in a community focused on aggression as well as the war machine, many of these creatures are obsessed with slaughtering the mythical beasts, because of a holy book which states the bears they used to be kings of the woods, before these creatures drove them out.
Others have not completely fallen for the indoctrination, , prefer to experiment with substances and engage sexually outdoors.
Unlike their friendly counterparts, these vivid animals display sexual organs and clear sex drives.
For one notably brutal, skeptical animal, the character Bluey, the conflict with the unicorns becomes a route toward dominance — and particularly to authority over his more tender, nicer brother the character Tubby.
This bear acts as a tormentor and a seeming sociopath , and as fear dominates his group and claims his teammates one by one, he grabs more and more influence on his own behalf, via progressively violent, harmful methods.
At the same time, the horned creatures are experiencing their own horror, through a spreading, harmful creature in their forest.
“At the beginning, it appears as a comedy,” the director said. “However it becomes a more dramatic and melancholic film. And in the finale, it’s a terrifying movie.”
Unicorn Wars starts out feeling a bit like one of the more whimsical movies by a renowned animator, which find a mischievous joy in permitting cartoon characters swear, fire weapons, or have intimate relations.
Then it becomes closer to a bleaker film from the same director, with increasingly explicit brutality , a palpable connection to genuine horror of war.
In the finale, it’s a complete theatrical horror bloodbath.
The terror that makes this a perfect Halloween movie starts much sooner than indicated.
Unicorn Wars is suited for the devoted fans of gore, for enthusiasts of graphic films who wish to see a movie they haven’t ever watched previously, and are able to withstand a plot which delivers unflinching brutality.
Watch it in a dimly lit space with no disturbances, and the finale will dig deep within you and stay with you.
