Patients Coming Off Weight-Loss Medications Put On Weight Far More Rapidly Than Dieters
Fresh analysis reveals that individuals who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds far faster than those who end traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Research printed in a major health publication points out that while obese people can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Users purchasing such medications must be informed of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery means a return to pre-treatment weight in about 18 months.
Comparing Therapies
The analysis, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Scientists note that individuals who lose weight through dieting generally experience a less rapid creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Explaining the Fast Rebound
Nutrition scientists propose the way of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated regain.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than normal may cause the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Discontinuation of this medication means hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."
A Chronic Disease?
Health authorities suggest the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians say that, considering the high risk of relapse, the therapy is often life-long.
This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "emphasize the long-term nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Testimonies
People who have stopped the medication explain a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"It felt as if something that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled an individual.
This challenge is compounded if users have not established permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Significant Interest
Figures suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire being substantial.
- Use is greater among women than males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while these medications are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and lasting health benefits likely depends on ongoing lifestyle changes.
