Outrage Erupts as Former President Trump's Social Media Remarks on Rob Reiner Spurs Widespread Rebuke

Individuals from both sides of the political divide and the entertainment industry are uniting to denounce Donald Trump for his statements in the wake of the shocking passing of acclaimed filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.

An Inflammatory Online Statement

Following the discovery of the couple dead at their Brentwood home, Trump posted on social media to label the deceased director as "tortured and struggling". In a message, he claimed Reiner's death was "because of the hostility he caused others through his massive, relentless, and incurable condition with a debilitating disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".

His comments then pivoted to praising his own achievements, juxtaposing Reiner's alleged "raging obsession" and "obvious paranoia" with what Trump called the "unprecedented era of America".

Law Enforcement Update and Arrest

Authorities have since announced the arrest of the couple's 32-year-old son, Nick, on suspicion of murder in connection with the incident. It is reported his bond was established at a significant amount.

A Torrent of Criticism from Public Figures

The response to Trump's words was swift and scathing.

“What a disgusting and vile comment,” remarked public figure Patrick Schwarzenegger.

Media personality Whoopi Goldberg, who called Reiner a friend, also condemned the statements. She referenced prior comments from Trump about the killing of an activist, demanding, "Do you have no decency? Can you get any lower?"

The state of California's Governor, Gavin Newsom, succinctly stated, "This is a disturbed man."

Echoing this sentiment, US House member Maxwell Alejandro Frost said, "He is a contemptible piece of garbage."

Senator Chris Murphy added, "He's just lost it. Now saying the Reiners caused their own murder because they didn’t support him. Deeply disturbing."

Rebuke from His Own Party

A number of Republican elected officials also expressed dismay.

Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the situation was "a personal tragedy, not about politics or political enemies". She also alluded to challenges with substance abuse and mental health some families face.

Fellow Republican congressman, Thomas Massie, called Trump's remarks "unacceptable and disgraceful" considering the circumstances. He openly challenged members in his political party to justify the statements.

The Director's Legacy and Views on Trump

Rob Reiner was long a vocal critic of Donald Trump. During a previous interview, he stated Trump was "not psychologically suited" for the office. He had also cautioned about the dangers of authoritarian rule if Trump be reelected to power.

"There is authoritarianism making its move around the world," Reiner said. "If we crumble, there’s a risk that democracy collapse around the world."

Despite his strong criticisms, Reiner had in the past expressed "absolute horror" and denounced violence for political ends without reservation after the shooting of a different individual.

A Notable Link: The Art of the Deal

Adding a layer of past connection, Michele Reiner, previously Michele Singer, was the artist who shot the photograph for Donald Trump's 1987 book, The Art of the Deal.

Rob Reiner had once recounted the story of the photo shoot, noting Trump's demand for "special hairspray" as being photographed on a skyscraper overlooking Central Park.
