Ahead of marking his half-decade plus one year as manager, Mikel Arteta has stated plainly that his continued role with the club is inextricably linked to delivering trophies.
A Look Back: Six Years in Charge
The Spanish coach was appointed on the 20th of December in 2019 and promptly led the team to an FA Cup triumph a short time later. However, that first major trophy remains his lone major honor after taking over from Unai Emery.
“Yes,” he stated in response to a query about his future past 2027. “But it’s about today. And many things have to happen in the near future as well to deserve that opportunity.”
This weekend sees the anniversary with a match versus Everton, the exact opponent Arsenal met the day after his appointment was announced.
League Position and Pressure
Given that chasing Manchester City set to face West Ham in an earlier kick-off, Arsenal face being knocked off the summit in the Premier League for the first time. This situation arises despite Arteta presiding over a squad that has endured more than a century of fitness issues over the course of last season.
He is tied down by 18 months remaining on the contract he inked in 2024, however, he knows that results must come in the immediate future.

He went on to explain, highlighting the daily requirement to validate his position. “My belief is that a manager has to earn the right to be here tomorrow. And that depends on how you react, how you communicate, how you step into the dressing room, the instructions you give.”
He added, expressing gratitude for the consistent faith from the hierarchy, yet identifying the squad's dedication as paramount. “At the end, the most important ones are those players... During my tenure, I’ve seen just players with a degree of commitment, willingness to improve and give the maximum to the team.”

The team faces the Everton match coping with yet another injury. Defender Ben White has been declared unavailable with a hamstring injury that is likely to see him miss action for a few weeks.
Confidence in the Path
Even with the availability issues and the high-stakes environment, Arteta feels the club's “focus and dialogue” are vastly different from when he began his reign.
Arteta highlighted the squad's displays as proof they are close. “Consider the performances, all the records that we... were breaking... We still haven’t managed to do that [win trophies]. But that indicates the level we are at.”
Arteta concluded, “It represents a quality that the Premier League has not seen before in the past. And we want to achieve more lofty ambitions. And if we do that, I think we are on the correct trajectory to winning.”
