Manchester United Poised to Sign German Forward Lea Schüller from the Bavarian Giants

Manchester United are finalising completing the signing for prolific German striker Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.

A Marquee Acquisition for the WSL Side

Schüller, who has half a year remaining on her deal, has been a prolific goalscorer for her club and the national team. She has scored more than 100 goals for the German giants and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for Germany. This signing will be seen as a marquee signing for the Women’s Super League side.

Her exit from Bayern was expected since she appeared to be holding back emotions while thanking the club's fans after a win over Bayer Leverkusen recently.

It was reported in late December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its leading strikers. Per multiple sources, the formalities for the move have now been completed.

Consistent Goalscoring to Boost United's Forward Line

The experienced striker's arrival is expected to provide a significant boost to the team's forward line. She has been highly reliable with her finishing in the Bundesliga.

  • Over seven consecutive seasons, including the last term, she achieved at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
  • She claimed the Golden Boot in 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.

Gathering Momentum at Carrington

The acquisition of Schüller’s signature comes at a time when United seem to be gathering positive momentum.

Their recent on-pitch successes feature securing a place in the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.

In the transfer market, the mid-season window has seen further activity:

  1. The signing of Swedish right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
  2. The contract extension for Japanese playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since arriving in 2023.

On Miyazawa’s extension, a club official commented: “She has become a vital part to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and skill enables her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”

Lundkvist, who has joined from a side from the American league, added: “You can feel how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
