Much like bad weather hit the north-west the prior day, the home side swept the visitors aside at the their home ground. It was a statement 3-0 victory for their manager's side owing to goals from Rebecca Knaak, Shaw and Hemp. It was a performance that clearly signaled their title credentials as they strengthened their position at the top of the table.

Consecutive Losses for United

This outcome marked back-to-back Women's Super League losses for Skinner's side for the first time since spring 2024, placing them seven points off the top team with their trophy ambitions in serious doubt.

United’s capability to balance domestic and European football with a small squad has been a widely debated issue since they qualified for the European competition. Reviewing the schedule, it always felt like this was the period that would truly test this fortitude. Sadly for the away side, they seemed fatigued all game, the memorable win against Paris Saint-Germain clearly having left its mark.

Lineup Adjustments

Marc Skinner had tried to make changes with a several adjustments. Toone, Elisabeth Terland, Janssen and Galton all provided freshness, although the omission of the on-form Melvine Malard to the substitutes was questioned.

City, in opposition, have no such fitness concerns. The City coach made one change from their most recent win over Everton with Hemp making her return to the lineup since returning from injury.

Dominant First Half

Early Chances

Ex- City player Jess Park came nearest, hitting the upright, but the visitors were offensively poor and were unable to register a solitary shot on goal.

The home side, meanwhile, could have increased their cushion when a delightful Miedema pass sent Shaw away only for her to miss the chance but it did not affect the result to the winning team. Previously unable to overcome any team who ended above them last season, City's side now have wins against Arsenal and Manchester United to place them in a favorable position after nine games.
