Catherine's Annual Christmas Musical Celebration Spotlights Charity Helpers

The Princess of Wales is hosting her customary Yuletide celebration at Westminster Abbey, with guests including members of the royal family, famous faces, and community champions who have helped their communities.

The sizable congregation will enjoy a blend of festive songs, musical performances, and spoken word pieces from stars like Chiwetel Ejiofor and Kate Winslet.

Centred Around Kindness and Compassion

The theme of the concert, held in the glowing Westminster Abbey on Friday, is generosity and expressing affection towards one's neighbour.

In the audience are Anna and Jonathan Cordiner, whose child passed away from a brain cancer, and who established a foundation, a charity called Kayleigh's Wee Stars, to help households where there is a terminally ill child.

"The time, care and compassion you give, often quietly and unspoken, and without any thought of thanks or praise, make an remarkable change to the well-being of people," the Princess expressed in a message before the carol service.

A Steady Comeback

The Princess of Wales is continuing her own gradual return to public life following her health challenges and treatment, in November making her major oration since 2023, in which she talked about recognising the "quiet, often invisible work of caring".

Music and Opportunity

Those coming to the Abbey will enjoy performances from budding artists backed by the Future Talent charity, co-founded by the former royal to widen access to musical tuition.

Carys Wood, aged 18, who performs on the trumpet and is from Wales, has been assisted by the charity, with awards contributing to musical instruments, lessons and travel costs - and she said it was "awesome" to be taking part in the evening's event.

"Music can be very expensive," Carys said. She is now a student at the prestigious music academy, and added that "all people deserve the chance" to develop their musical skills.

A Sisterly Duo

Eliza, Carys's sister who is 11, who plays the euphonium, will likewise attend the Abbey. "It's unbelievable that I get to perform here in front of so many distinguished guests," she said.

Among the guests will be representatives of different generations.

That will encompass young Saphia Turner, nine, winner of a young hero award, who produces drawings and undertakes charity feats to raise money for food banks.

Yuletide Atmosphere and Acts

The Abbey has been festooned with custom-created holiday decorations, with well-known chef Mary Berry and flower expert Simon Lycett helping to make them.

Among the musical performers will be singer Katie Melua, the Abbey's own choir and a Cornish sea shanty group, the Fisherman's Friends, who said the invitation to sing was "the icing on the cake for us."

This annual carol service will be televised and shown on ITV1 on Christmas Eve.
