At least thirteen individuals perish and ninety-eight wounded in train crash in the nation of Mexico.
A fatal train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the speed and handling of the country's major public works projects.
The crash took place on the Interoceanic Train, a route constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify the cause of this incident,” affirmed the country's president.
The president confirmed that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The official noted plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the previous administration, whose time in office finished the prior year. This venture was intimately linked to his government's economic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The development of both railway systems was supervised by the army, marking a significant increase of its role in public projects. They were executed at an accelerated speed, beating predictions to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also fueled ongoing questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an earlier crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the tragedy, the head of a primary political opposition called for an immediate pause in the building and running of all such projects.
This halt was suggested until the completion of a thorough independent investigation. The party stated that the situation "calls for immediate answers."
In reaction, the head of state asserted that the train had been functioning in complete adherence to all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and running of these strategic undertakings.
